Bruce Township French Drain – Every Home Needs Water Management

We’re in beautiful Bruce Township, Michigan. The site we’re working on, look at the view. Look at the elevation! You wouldn’t think you’d have a water problem. But yet, you have to manage water just about on any lot and on any home, there’s water coming off the roof, there’s roof run off water.

There’s your sump pump, if it’s taken a day late you have to be very conscious of the direction and path in which you’re managing that water. So I basically want to shoot this video because of this elevation and the fact that there’s so much water moving back here that we’re going to be Giving it a direct path to a marshy area.

Now when they develop these areas, they do have to level them off to where you could actually build a house. So when they cut the hill down, you end up with something like this. Now after a rain, the water moves for about a week. So we have a lot of rain on its way for the next three days.

We decided to get in here and take care of this now. Figure this is about as dry as it’s going to get. You can see the customer put straw bales to, basically slow the water down, to minimize the erosion. Now it’s still plenty wet and there’s still a trickle of water, and it hasn’t rained, and it’s been a week and a half for sure.

So, what we’re going to do. Before they go ahead and put basically a nature-scape together over here. Perennials, natural grasses, just let it be. Easiest to care for. All right, so We are going to dig a trench. We’re going to drop a six inch pipe in. We’re going to move a lot of water.

This is interesting. This is the first table top, right here. We have all this fall. And literally the system from start to finish has seven feet of fall. That’s fantastic, but the problem is we hit this area. Literally when I went through this area with my laser transit, its flat.

So when the water reaches this point, it just basically fans out and saturates this entire area. They can’t even cut the lawn. You can see where the lawn tractor, when it got off the sod, just sunk right there. So we follow the path that the water has already created.

That’s going to be the best route right there. Right here’s the sump. This is what they refer to as a sump to daylight, stomping right there we’re going to reach out and grab that water by t and off. Now a week ago I came here and with, in my mock boots I just drug my heel so that the water would find its way down into that Ditch swell-type marshy area.

And that’s the path we’re going to take. And we’re going to make a dry crick bed out of it. Now, this also was another table top, if you will. Here we got seven-plus feet of fall, two areas where the water just fans out and saturates the sub-soil. So by creating a trench and giving it a path, we’re going to take care of that problem.
