How To Avoid Problems When Running Downspouts Underground

Avoid Problems Running Downspouts Underground

I’m at a home that had downspouts ran underground and the pipe right here where the pavers are heaved.  They ended up just putting the discharge right there.

I can explain to you what’s happened here. The underground pipe went underneath the walk and up. Now it’s trapping water.

In the winter time, if this was concrete, this would be a break. It’s pavers, so it’s heaved. This can be repaired, but how to avoid this problem when running downspouts is to under the walk and once you’re at a certain level, you can’t come back up. You stay at that level until you finally ended up coming out at daylight, which would have been further down the grade for underground downspouts.
