Non Woven Geotextile Fabric 8 oz
What is double-punched non woven geotextile fabric?
Double-punched non woven geotextile is made from a thick felt-like material crafted with millions of polypropylene fibers. During manufacturing, the fabric is needle punched twice to allow water to flow through while simultaneously preventing soil and organic material from passing to extend your drainage system’s life dramatically.
What is non woven geotextile fabric used for?
This durable fabric has many applications that include:
- French drains
- Farming and gardening
- Road stabilization
- Drainage installations
- Retaining walls
Why is non woven geotextile fabric better than woven geotextile fabric?
The primary difference between geotextiles is how they’re manufactured. As the name suggests, woven geotextiles are manufactured by weaving round fibers in one direction, and flat fibers in another direction. Meanwhile, non woven geotextile fabric is manufactured using a needle punch to create a permeable material.
Unlike woven, which follows a uniform pattern, non woven geotextiles have a random design created by the barbed needle, giving it superior strength. The water permeability (at least 100 GPM per sq ft) and superior strength make non woven geotextile the best choice for yard drainage solutions, especially when preventing water from pooling is the primary concern.
Difference between 8oz and 4oz
Non woven geotextiles are typically categorized by the weight of the fabric, which corresponds to the fabric’s strength, thickness, and drainage capabilities.
Lightweight fabric, usually between 3oz and 5oz, is more permeable and allows water to flow at a greater rate. The heavy-weight fabric has a slower drainage rate but provides greater strength and support for soil stabilization.
The 8oz fabric is a heavier, more rugged option that will last lifetimes and generations if properly installed.
Here at FDM, we select the best weight for each individual drainage project. We like to use 4oz fabric where a high flow rate is essential and 8oz fabric in low-flow applications.
How geotextile fabric works in a French drain
Geotextile fabric permits the free flow of water while retaining soil particles.
Your French drain will perform immediately after installation, but it won’t perform at its maximum efficiency until all the sediment washes through it. Once some time has elapsed, and sediment passes through the drainage fabric, the better soil filter zone becomes. The soil filter zone that forms and the hydrostatic pressure is key to your French drain working at its best.
